Autumn Sports – Which Activities Are Worth Trying?

15.10.2026

Running shoes by the door, a bike ready to go, or perhaps a swimming pool membership? In autumn, it’s worth planning your physical activity around shorter days and changeable weather. Make the most of a sunny afternoon with an outdoor workout, or use a rainy evening to try something indoors. Which autumn sports should you choose to make exercise fit naturally into your daily routine and keep you motivated to train? Let’s explore a few options.

Running and Nordic Walking – Make the Most of Cooler Days

A familiar park trail looks different in autumn, so even your usual route can offer a refreshing change of scenery. If you enjoy running, adjust your pace and distance to your current fitness level. Just getting started? Alternate short jogging intervals with walking instead of pushing yourself to cover more and more kilometres.

If you prefer a brisk walk, try Nordic walking. Consider learning the correct pole technique with an instructor so you can consciously engage your upper body as well. Dress in layers, and if you head out after dark, wear reflective gear and use a light to help you spot uneven ground. Wet leaves can be slippery, so slow down and watch your step on these sections. Plan your route so you can easily shorten it if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Cycling in Autumn – Shorter Routes Count, Too

Your bike doesn’t have to sit idle until spring. In autumn, even a 30-minute loop around your neighbourhood or a bike commute can be a great option, provided you have a suitable route. Save longer rides for clear days off, and check the forecast and sunset time before setting out.

Keep in mind that the wind chill can make cycling feel colder than walking, so gloves and a lightweight windproof jacket will come in handy. Check your brakes and front and rear lights, too. On wet surfaces, reduce your speed, especially when approaching bends. When choosing a route, plan your return journey as well – ideally, finish your recreational ride before dark.

Swimming and Strength Training – Ideal Choices for Rainy Evenings

Swimming laps or lifting dumbbells? The choice depends on how you enjoy exercising. Swimming engages multiple muscle groups and helps build whole-body endurance. It’s a great cardio option, especially if you prefer exercise without the impact associated with running or jumping. Water reduces the load on your joints, while choosing the right stroke and maintaining proper technique can help keep your back comfortable. Start with shorter distances and gradually increase your swimming time to match your fitness level.

Strength training, in turn, allows you to increase the difficulty gradually and track your progress. To begin with, a few exercises targeting the major muscle groups are enough, using weights that allow you to control every movement. You can work out at the gym or at home with resistance bands or dumbbells. Keep a record of your exercises and weights so you can plan your next session more easily.

Dancing, Squash or Climbing – Try Something New

It’s easier to return to a workout when you’re already looking forward to the next one. If repeating the same exercises gets boring, autumn is a great opportunity to try a new sport. Dancing is ideal for those who enjoy music and being active with a partner or in a group. Squash combines intense movement with competition, while indoor climbing adds a puzzle to your workout: where should you place your foot to reach the next hold?

Before buying a membership, try a beginner-friendly introductory session. You’ll learn the basics and see whether this type of activity suits you. You could also invite a friend – a trip to the squash court or climbing wall is a great way to spend time together after work while staying active.

How to Create an Autumn Exercise Plan You Can Stick to

Take a look at your weekly schedule and find room for physical activity. Two afternoons when you’re genuinely free are a better starting point than a plan involving daily workouts that are difficult to fit around your other commitments. Choose an activity you enjoy and prepare an alternative for bad weather. If heavy rain rules out cycling, you can always do a short workout at home.

Regular physical activity should go hand in hand with a well-balanced diet. Make room in your autumn menu for whole grains, seeds and nuts – sources of magnesium, which helps maintain normal muscle and nervous system function and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue [1]. If your dietary intake is insufficient, a dietary supplement such as Magnesium Bisglycinate may help supplement your diet. It contains a highly bioavailable organic form of magnesium (an amino acid chelate).

Remember to make time for recovery and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Take water with you even when exercising on chilly days. After a few weeks, assess which activities you enjoy and which are difficult to fit into your schedule. Your autumn exercise plan can evolve over time – helping you stay motivated to keep moving for longer.
